SPOCK'S
BEARD - DAY FOR NIGHT
Day
for night
An excellent
prog song, with the well-known Beard sound. It's straight in line
with 'The kindness of strangers'. So this song isn't specific
for the new album, but very tasty as well.
Gibberish
The
brilliant song 'Thoughts' from 'Beware of darkness' did allready
show some Gentle Giant rip-offs. This one is even more GG and
shows a Neal Morse at his best. Magnificent singing and, off
course marvelous mellotron parts.
Skin
Spock's
Beard in a mainstream jacket. This isn't my favorite song, but
proves that SB has a lot more than only over-the-top progrock
qualities. A compact song with smoe nice special elements
The
distance to the sun
Some may
say that this is a very beautiful ballad. If you like 'June' then
you will do. I think it's too much Simon & Garfunkel and doesn't
fit right on this album. It's absolutely not bad, but I prefer
the second ballad on this record.
Crack the big sky Ten
minutes of real classic prog, with a real sax-solo in the middle.
When that sax was recorded more convincing then this would be
my favorite track. This song refers to the 'Beware of darkness'
days.
The
gypsy
A song
with a lot of tempo changes. This is not the song that you would
like the most when listening the first time. But it grows and
you should recognize the elements better and better as you play
it again and again. This is the real Spock's Beard.
Can't get it wrong
It starts
like a Beatles/ELO ballad with a very recognizable chorus. (You
figure it out) Though it's technically spoken not equal to 'The
distance to the sun', which contains some multi-vocals. It is
more a Spock's Beard song than other ballads.
The
healing colours of sound
A masterpiece
with six separate items that make a Beard epic complete. 'My shoes'
and 'Mommy comes back' are very well balanced songs, but cannot
really seen apart. This song brings back the feelings from 'The
light', which is absolutely a classic album in it's pureness.
Spock's Beard made a real progression with this album. But I can't
say that the level of the first two albums can be equaled. We
can expect a lot more quality from these Americans.
