The more Earth  the better the album (rating from 1 to 5).

Nangyala - Spheres
(CDistributions)

A mini-album containing 5 songs says the text on the cover. Normally I just have the feeling of leaving it in it's place. But this time I'm glad that I've got to listen to this Dutch band called Nangyala (nan-gee-ala, try and practise a lot before you can pronounce it). 'Spheres', released in 1997, opens with a Floyd-like song 'Afraid'. This treats the background of this band that has it's roots in the Pink Project shows back in 1995. Influences of Floyd (Echoes, the Wall, etc...) in an easy shape more flowing than the masters themselves and reaching to Marillion for instance. The second 'No Willy!' is a instrumental rocker that doesn't affect me much. The following song has more to offer. 'Satin dress' is a slow and nice ballad but does have some Floyd influences that you won't hear often from other influenced bands. Above all there's a lovely violin in it, that makes this lullaby very special. 'As you fly' is an up-tempo rocksong that misses body. 'Brand new day' closes the album, it begins with a hammond sound that we know already from the old Floyd songs. A good song to end an album. The songs all show more than five minutes on the counter and when there were two or three more songs like the first or last track then it absolutely reached above a medium quality. But there is hope. I've listened to some new material that promises a more progressive approach with some ELP influences. Next time probably a longer album and we will welcome a new star in the sympho-sky.
