The more Earth  the better the album (rating from 1 to 5). Ageness - Rituals

Ageness - Rituals
(Ageness AGSCD 9 / Musea FGBG 4240.AR)

Ageness from Finland, probably the Genesis (late '70's) of the '90's. There is a lot to say for that. Listening to their first album 'Showing paces' you can absolutely say that they have listened very well to the post-Gabriel Genesis albums. This new one leaves that path a bit more. There's oftern a typical Genesis approach in the compositions, but you can hear more than just that. Though the vocal parts could be mentioned very English, you can aware some reference to Saga for instance (sometimes it makes me think of Axl Rose; I don't know why). The stunning guitarsolos makes it very peculiar too. You don't hear much about prog bands coming from Finland, but the ones we know are very special, so is Ageness. 'Rituals' is their second official full length album and could be compared to their debut 'Showing paces', which is absolutely brilliant. It not right to say that 'Rituals' is less than the first one, but it's surely not superiour to that epic album. Obviously it is a good album, with pure symphonic passages and some heavy stuff mixed with a typical Genesis moods and breaks as already mentioned above. Highlights are 'Forever returns', 'Polyphemus', 'Take us all', 'Hidden space' and 'Mortal wings of sin II'. Keep an eye (ear) on this uprising progrock group.
